ICELAND STRONGEST EARTHQUAKE SINCE 2000

An earthquake shook Southern Iceland on Thursday, 29 May, 2008.

The earthquake was between the towns of Hveragerði and Selfoss.

The earthquake had struck at about 1546 GMT and have a magnitude of about 6.3 and measured 6.1 on the Richter scale.
The associated press, quoting civil defense authorities reported 15 to 20 people from Selfoss, near the epicenter, were taken for medical treatment. Although only about 30 people have light injuries, a number of sheep were killed and roads and building were damaged. A hospital in a town was also damaged and patients had to evacuate.
Many farms had also been affected.

This earthquake was the strongest earthquake to hit Iceland since the summer of 2000.
Iceland is sitting on a plate boundary where the North America and Eurasian plates are drifting apart. In Iceland, the ridge is somewhat off-set, thus, it created two transform faults where plates move horizontally along each other. The two transform faults, one is in the north of the country while the other is in the south of the country.
This 29 May earthquake thus happened on the southern fault.
Rescue team were helping people to evacuate to a safer area.
The Icelandic red cross helps the victims out.

Authorities advised residents in the area to leave their homes because of the possibility of aftershocks.

To minimize damage from such events, I think buildings should be constructed and build more steadily and firmly, and make sure tall and heavy furniture are correctly and properly fastened to the wall.
Organize how you are going to evacuate fast so that you would not panic at that time when there is an earthquake, thus, we should always be physically and mentally prepared in natural disasters anytime.
